OVER 60 teams have registered so far for this weekend's Clean up Fiji Day event.

Event coordinator Micheal Dennis said over 4000 had used the early registration process to ensure they received gloves and bags for the day.

He said some of the bigger teams were the Colo-i-Suva Community Group, which had registered over 100 people to clean up the forest park area.

Ba Town Council had 13 teams registered, made up of over 700 members, with the Ra Rural Local Authority registering 100 people, he said.

"Koro High School has registered 200 to clean up the school compound and surrounds. Viani Village in Natewa Bay has registered 200 people."

Mr Dennis said the Fiji Navy had also got into the spirit of things and registered two teams. This would mean that over 60 navy divers would be in the water on Saturday to clean up waters along Stinson Parade to Walu Bay.

He said the Vunimono Youth Group had registered 50 to clean up Vunimono Village, with a group called HOPE (which stands for Helping Our Polluted Environment) seeing 80 register to clean up Labasa's main street.

The Rukuruku beach front area in the West would be targeted by the Shangri La Fijian Hotel, he said.

Among others who have registered are 30 people under the Department of Environment and 483 with St Joseph the Worker Primary School.

The school kids will clean the school compound and along the Kings Road.

Organisers say the St Joseph the Worker Primary School group would also be the first to kick off the clean up starting on Thursday.

Some schools had also requested that their contribution to the national effort take place on Friday while children were on the premises.

"We have the support of the Town councils and Provincial councils around Fiji," organisers say.

Registration is highly encouraged if your group wants to have bags and gloves on the day.

Once you are registered, team leaders can pick up gloves and bads from Tebbutt Research or they can be delivered or couriered to the West, North or outer islands.

The big day is Saturday November 22 from 8.00am-11.00am.
