Campaign off the ground

Friday, November 21, 2008

The Clean-Up Fiji campaign started yesterday with Saint Joseph The Worker Primary School students and mothers joining hands to clean up the school compound.

Headteacher Paulo Lala said this was the first time for the school to take part in the campaign.

"We believe that it is important to teach our students the importance of keeping the environment clean," he said.

"For us it's a challenge because if they are not doing it at home they can't do it at school.

"We spend five minutes everyday to pick rubbish but we have decided to take part in this year's campaign because we need to show our students the beauty of living in an environment that is clean," he added.

About 15 mothers joined more than 700 students to clean the school compound and the portion of Kings Road in front of the school.

"The students enjoyed themselves and we believe that we have taught them something that they can do the rest of their lives," Mr Lala said.

The students and mothers of the Nakasi school were dressed in white with gloves and garbage bags supplied by Clean-Up Fiji.

Mr Lala said rubbish would be separated into different categories to teach students on how best to dispose them.

"There are some that can be recycled and there are some that can be sold for money. It's a good exercise because we have showed them how to do it," he said.
